This Eco-Doghouse, designed by Matthew Coates of Coates Design Architects, was built of 100% overage from construction projects, utilizing materials that may have otherwise gone to landfills. And, since this doghouse was built with sustainability in mind, it is arguably one of the healthiest indoor living environments built for a dog.

During Greenbuild, the FSC-US announced Coates Design Architects as Honorable Mention in its annual competition celebrating the use of FSC-certified wood in building projects.

Coates Design Architects was pleased to welcome over 200 people to the AIA Home of the Month Tour on Sunday, November 21.  The first snow of the season arrived on the day of the tour, but the weather did not deter the enthusiastic crowd of architecture fans.

Matthew Coates recently returned from a visit to Japan, where he lectured to industry leaders about sustainable design and green building. Coming soon, a new branch office in Tokyo.

Leading the Way presents an evening with Actor and Environmentalist, Ed Begley, Jr. and Seattle Architect, Matthew Coates. The two will discuss architecture and sustainability.

The Bainbridge Art Museum Open House was a huge success! Matthew Coates and team presented 3D concept sketches of the proposed Bainbridge Art Museum structure on April 26 at Bainbridge Performing Arts. 

The greenest home in Bainbridge gets one step closer to Platinum LEED status thanks to Coates Design Architects. Justin Helmbrecht explains how the vegetated roof helps reduce rainwater runoff while also providing a garden area escape.  

We are pleased to announce that the Ellis Residence will be part of the American Solar Energy Society National Solar Tour on October 3, 2009. More details to come.

The Ellis Residence has been used as an educational tour a few times already. The design was featured at the Futures Festival in Port Gamble last summer.

The Loewen exterior bi-fold doors have been installed at the living and dining rooms. The bi-fold doors will allow both rooms to fully open to the exterior patio, landscaping and, of course, the magnificent view of Seattle.

So far we have discussed one of the active climate control systems, Geothermal, utilized in the Ellis Residence. As construction moves right along, we would like to introduce you to the installation of the first passive system, Thermal Mass.
